This October, the Historic Fayette Theater proudly brings a homegrown story to its stage with Business as Usual, a play by renowned West Virginia playwright Jean Battlo. Known for work that illuminates the culture, humor, and struggles of Appalachia, Battlo invites audiences to reflect on stories rooted in our own communities.
Set in southern West Virginia in the 1990s, when jobs in the coal mines are becoming harder to come by, Business as Usual is a hilarious slice of Appalachian life. Tom Woolwine, a miner since age 16, refuses handouts; he just wants a job! With his son Joey at his side and advice from his no-nonsense “mountain mama” Gran, Tom takes a risk on the one business that never shuts down… and from there, the comedy takes off in this witty, heartfelt play.
